Body
Historically, most plant breeding was conducted in an academic setting. Over time, much of this activity moved into the biotechnology and seed industries. Today, academic plant scientists contribute to agricultural plant improvement through improvements in plant breeding methods, breeding programs targeted at niche crops, developing phenotyping and statistical tools to speed up the plant breeding process, innovations in bioinformatics and genomics, and plant trait discovery.
